According to several sources, the Giatns are very close to re-structuring Head Coach Tom Coughlin’s contract, making him in the top 5 for highest-paid coaches in the NFL. The contract details include about $5 million per season for 4 years.

He deserves it, and to think he came this far!

NY Post: Mets Nearly Hired McNamee, but then Saw his History

February 28, 2008 · Filed Under Mets · Comment

Former Roger Clemens trainer, Brian McNamee, was close to becoming a member of the Mets’ coaching staff last season, according to the New York Post.

Mets manager Willie Randolph and former hitting coach Rick Down both supported hiring McNamee, whom they both knew from their time with the Yankees as a batting practice pitcher, the Post reported.

Mets general manager Omar Minaya turned down their recommendation after gauging McNamee’s reputation within baseball and deciding that McNamee did not fit the role.

Good thing! That would be the last thing the Mets need right now, a distraction. They not only are a team in New York, so by default they get more media all over them than usual, but they also just collapsed last year, and enough people are running the mouths about that.

McNamee and Clemens are right in the center of steroid allegatons, as the courts decide which one of them is lying about giving Clemens performance-enhancing drugs.

Too Cold for BP?!

February 27, 2008 · Filed Under Mets · Comment

The Mets think its too cold for batting practice and it was 55 degrees. That is certainly cold for Florida, but if they can’t take BP in that kind of weather, they better get ready for some chilly days in the beginning and end of the season at Shea.

Now, don’t get all crazy on me, I know there are several times when teams do not take batting practice (day game after night game), but when you just started playing baseball a few weeks ago and you are only in Spring Training, I think you should be able take batting practice in the daytime when you are in Florida, especially when it is not raining.

But maybe I should not completely blame the Mets because they were the away team, while I’m guessing the Tigers also did not take batting practice.

Mets First Grapefruit Game

Wow, a real game. Not a game against some college team, no more news about El Duque throwing a baseball like a wiffle balls, no more news about players not getting in because of VISA problems… because that was the best news anyone could get.

The New York Mets today will travel to Lakeland, Florida to take on the Detroit Tigers at 1pm . Starting for the Mets will be Mike Pelfrey.

Coming up: Live blogging from Port St Lucie

Don’t forget to check on Sunday and Monday throught the day, as I will be blogging live from Port St lucie on March 3rd when the Mets play the Atlanta Braves. The day before, I will be in Orlando to cover the Atlanta Braves when they play the Houston Astros.

Wanna know something weird?

Mets starting pitcher John Maine went online for the FIRST time last week, according to Marty Noble at Mets.com.John Maine

Gee, I guess maybe some stars are right when they say they don’t get into the news very much. He did say he reads newspapers, but still, you can get a lot more current news online.

Here’s what Noble had to say about this silly fact:

“Welcome to the 1990s, John Maine. The Mets pitcher now has Internet experience. He went online for the first time last week.

“Now that I know how,” he said, “I’m not sure what to look for.”

An avid reader, Maine said, ‘I’d rather hold a newspaper in my hands.’ ”

Yikes…Well, as long as you pitch like you did in the first half of last year for the whole year this year, we’ll all be happy, won’t we?
